Air disinfection: How to ensure a clean room climate

Be it the annual routine check-up at the doctor's, the long-awaited visit to the hairdresser, an evening at your favourite restaurant or the upcoming opening of the day-care centre: Many people are happy about the relaxation in the context of the Corona pandemic and are increasingly allowing a bit of normality to return to their everyday lives. However, this feeling of freedom is often accompanied by the fear of being infected.

This is not an easy time, especially for companies with a large number of people. For them, it is time to rethink, because in addition to distance rules and compulsory masks, there are other measures that help those affected to achieve sterile air and thus greater safety for their visitors.

How is Covid-19 spreading?

The novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is spread in most cases by droplet infection (e.g. by coughing or body contact). A disease via a smear infection is also not excluded. However, many scientists assume that the microscopic virus particles can also be transmitted via aerosols, for example when a person stays in closed rooms with infected persons for a long time, walks next to them or jogging. According to laboratory tests, the pathogens can survive in this state in the air for around 3 hours. (Source: Quarks.de, 2020)

The waiting room - a place where everyone meets: Patients with sniffing noses, coughing and hoarseness, feverish and gastro-intestinal illnesses. No wonder that especially in times of corona the fear of being infected is even greater than usual. But how do I manage to keep my premises as germ-free as possible in addition to regular airing and the obligation to wear a mask and keep a distance, thus preventing the risk of infection even more strongly? Not only doctors and clinics are currently facing a challenge here.

So-called air sterilizers help to eliminate the germ infestation of the air almost completely (often up to 99 percent) and without the use of chemicals. The filters against viruses, bacteria or mould can also be put into operation all day long - regardless of whether there are people in the room or not. In this way, you can ensure a clean room climate in the long term and an increased sense of well-being and fewer worries among your visitors.

Areas of application of air sterilizers:

  • Medical practices, hospitals, day-care centres and pharmacies
  • Open plan offices or cafeterias
  • Hairdressing salons and beauty salons
  • Public institutions
  • Food industry
  • Cold storage and storage rooms
  • Premises with high frequency of use

What types of air purifiers are there?

When air is exhaled, it can contain viruses and other pathogens. Besides influenza viruses, the novel SARS-CoV-2 can also be detected in the exhaled air of an infected person. However, viruses like these (with a maximum of 160 nm) do not move around in the air in isolation, but instead join together in larger droplets - so-called aerosols. Every human being emits the smallest aerosols (of a size of 1 µm) when breathing out. This means that each breath can contain 1,000 to 50,000 droplets. When coughing, the droplets are ten times larger (over 10 µm).

Air purification units with special filters or UVC radiation manage to remove more than 90 percent of suspended particles and thus treat the indoor climate.

What is UVC radiation?

UVC rays are short-wave rays that have a strong germicidal effect on micro-organisms such as viruses, bacteria but also mould. The rays change the DNA of microorganisms in such a way that their reproduction is no longer possible. This germicidal effect occurs within a very short time. Depending on the intensity of the radiation, the radiation time and the type of microorganisms, an almost 100% reduction of pathogenic germs is possible. Enterococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, SARS, corona or EBOLA viruses can thus be killed quickly, in an environmentally friendly manner and with low operating costs. (Source: uv-ozon.com, 2020)

UVC air sterilisers have a built-in fan that sucks in ambient air and directs it past the UVC tubes. There the DNA of the microorganisms absorbs the UVC radiation. This finally blocks cell division and the microorganisms die. What remains is almost germ-free air. Thanks to the protection provided by the UVC tubes, it is possible for people to stay in the rooms without any risk of harm during use.

Air cleaning devices with filter

A humidifier is usually not sufficient to keep the air quality permanently clean, especially in larger, heavily frequented rooms. This is why more and more owners of other public facilities, in addition to hospitals and doctors' surgeries, are using air disinfectors. The core of an air purifier is usually an inserted filter package, e.g. made of paper or a HEPA filter. This filter removes the smallest particles of fine dust, house dust, allergens and other pollutants from the air.

Popular manufacturers for air purifiers in Germany

Our manufacturers BioSan, Dinies or UV-Technik Meyer produce high-quality devices for air purification in closed rooms. The devices are successfully used in numerous laboratories and are applied in solariums, cosmetics, medicine or health care. Due to the corona pandemic, it has also become increasingly important for many operators of public facilities to ensure a healthy indoor climate and thus relieve their guests of worries about infection. This is why you will now increasingly find our manufacturers' equipment in hairdressing salons, day-care centres, open-plan offices and in the catering trade.

Our recommendation for you:

For medium-sized premises with a volume of approx. 45m³, we have received positive reports from doctors' practices, hairdressing and cosmetic salons, law firms or health care facilities such as physiotherapy. These use the Dinies UV air purifier UVG18, which is ideal for cleaning the air in your waiting area and guaranteeing your customers or patients optimum health protection.

Dinies air purifiers are of course also suitable for larger rooms - for example, the UVG80 for around 100 m³, or the UVG360 for 400 m³. You can find an overview of our most popular air purification units in our UV technology category.
