Heating Baths - areas of application
Heating baths are to be found in laboratories of all types in the fields of chemistry, biology, pharmaceuticals, medicine or the food industry. A heating bath is used in the laboratory to allow a chemical reaction to take place at increased temperature, whereby the heating bath contains a fluid or other media located in a heating bath container, a metal pot or crystallising bowl. The fluid employed in a heating bath is mainly water, oil polyethylene glycol or other solutions. Depending on their application, the medium and the temperatures at which they operated, heating baths can roughly be categorised into fluid baths, water baths, oil baths, glycol baths, sand baths, air baths, metal baths or shaking baths. Water baths are used in the case of temperatures up to 100°C, while a glycol bath is used between 100°C and 200°C and an oil bath is also used at temperatures over 100°C. At higher temperatures sand baths are used. ProfiLab24 offers universal laboratory heating baths that have been developed for precision heating and tempering in the laboratory. Our top-class heating baths by manufacturers such as IKA, GFL, JULABO, LAUDA, GRANT, Gestigkeit, witeg, Aerne Analytic or BioSan are in use above all in university, private businesses or industrial research laboratories.
Heating Baths - functions
A heating bath is a laboratory heating device, the primary function of which is to temper/heat fluids or other media and thereby heat the immersed vessels such as round flasks, beakers, distillation or Erlenmeyer flasks. For this the heating bath filling agent, fluid, water or oil, is heated on a hot plate, generally with a magnetic stirrer which serves to circulate the tempering fluid and better distribute the heat in the heating bath. In traditional heating baths a thermometer is held in the fluid to check the temperature of the heat-transferring fluid. In the case of the offered heating baths for continuous operation in the laboratory, temperature regulation takes place via automatic adjustment of the target and actual temperatures by way of contact thermometers/sensors and microprocessor-controlled regulators/controllers.
Heating Bath - types
Heating baths come in different designs, sizes and types. The range of heating baths on offer extends for small heating devices, multipurpose heating devices, shaker water baths to water baths with several hot plates. Which model should be used in a laboratory essentially depends on the required temperatures, fluids/media and the heating bath volume. At ProfiLab24 we currently classify our heating baths into the following heating bath types:
- revolving bath
- tissue float bath
- water/fluid bath
- oil bath
- air bath
- sand bath
- shaking bath
- with support rod
