Laboratory Incubators - uses
Incubators are used in laboratories in the fields of biology, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, medicine or in the food industry. ProfiLab24 currently offers incubators by the manufacturers IKA, GFL or BioSan, with these laboratory incubators mainly being employed in university, private or industrial research laboratories. Incubators are essential pieces of laboratory equipment for research work in cellular biology, microbiology and molecular biology. An incubator or culture chamber for microbiology, is a device used for the cultivation of microorganisms, bacteria, yeasts, insect, animal and plant cell cultures. With a laboratory incubator controlled conditions for various cultivation, development and growth processes can be created and maintained. In medicine, for example, the behaviour of cells and their growth provides important clues as to how particular cell types will behave under certain conditions. In everyday laboratory practice cell samples are places in the incubators and their reactions to the individually set environmental conditions are observed.
Lab Incubator - functions
Laboratory incubators are used both for bacterial and eukaryotic cells. Depending on their design, laboratory incubators have various functions. The main function of incubators is to create and maintain optimum conditions for cultivation and growth processes. In order to bring about and maintain a particular microclimate, the temperature, relative humidity and other conditions, such as the carbon dioxide and oxygen content in the incubator atmosphere can be regulated. For this, the laboratory incubator has a timer, a temperature regulator and often also a device for regulating the supplied fresh air. CO2 incubators are primarily for the cultivation of animal cells. Special laboratory incubators with turning device are used, for example, in the case of embyronated hens eggs. To promote cell growth and to prevent residual film formation shaking incubators are used - such as the KS 4000 by IKA or the orbital shaker incubator ES 20 by BioSan. Incubations shakers constantly mix the samples by way of a moving base plate, whereby the samples are normally stored in conventional laboratory vessels such as Erlenmeyer flaks or Petri dishes and are fastened to the shaking table with clips or holders.
Laboratory Incubators - models
Lab Incubators come in a wide variety of sizes and types. The spectrum of models extends from small table-top incubators to room-sized incubators. Which incubators should be used in a laboratory essentially depends on the tests being carried out and the number of samples being cultivated at the same time. In the case of o-called incubation shakers such as the GFL shaker incubator-3033 the shaking frequency can be adjusted by means of an operating element for gentle mixing or powerful shaking over a longer period. Routine and research laboratories prefer these laboratory incubators for fermentation, incubation, chemical and biochemical reactions, enzyme and tissue studies as well as the cultivation of bacteria colonies.
Mini-incubators can be universally employed for incubation processes that require precisely reproducible temperatures. These laboratory incubators are best suited for the tempering, keeping warm and drying of samples.
A roller incubator with rotary movements is can be used for incubation and hybridisation processes that require precisely reproducible temperatures. Such laboratory incubators usually have easily adjustable rollers for the use of bottles of different diameters.
Hybridisation incubators, such as the GFL hybridisation incubator are ideal laboratory incubators for hybridisation processes or all kinds, such as DNA and RNA probes with nucleic acid on filter paper or for the incubation of protein blots with antibodies.
