Laboratory mills and grinders come in various designs from a variety of manufactures: Fritsch, IKA, Bühler, Ingenieurbüro CAT, M. Zipperer GmbH, Retsch or Netzsch. Our laboratory mill models primarily differ from each other in their structure and method of comminution. The different types of laboratory mills are often subdivided into: analysis mills, cutting mills, beater mills, micromills, mortar grinders, rotor mills, ball mills, disc mills, knife mills and other categories. Ball mills, for example, are laboratory mills for fine comminution and are ideal for mixing and homogenisation. These laboratory mills consist of a rotating grinding bowl into which the material to be ground is filled. Grinding in these laboratory mills takes place through impact effects and the rubbing of the sample between the grinding balls and the inner wall of the bowl. Laboratory mills of this type break down dry or wet, medium-hard to hard samples into the finest particle sizes. Cutting mills on the other hand are laboratory mills that break down the sample material between two vertical grinding disks. In this type of laboratory mill one movable grinding disk moves against a stationary one, whereby the material to be ground is pre-crushed in the laboratory mill and transported by way of centrifugal forces to the outer area of the grinding disk where fine comminution takes place. The degree of fineness of the samples not only influences their homogeneity, but also their subsequent analysis properties.
