A laminar box - also known as a laminar flow box - is a clean workstation for working in dust-free, sterile conditions or a clean room bench. Laminar boxes and cabinets are used in various areas such as in laboratories in the fields of biology, microbiology, chemistry, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, medical technology, in hospitals, pharmacies or in the food industry. Laminar flow boxes are also employed in optical, laser, semi-conductor and electronics technology. In all these areas a clean, particle and germ-free environment for protecting the products as well as the user play an important role. Often complete, technically-sophisticated clean rooms are set up at enormous cost. A laminar box with extraction devices and high-performance filters offers a more cost-effective alternative to this as clean room conditions are brought about in rooms precisely where they are needed.
Laminar Flow Box / Cabinet - principle functions
In the laboratory and in industry a laminar flow box takes on various tasks and functions depending on the area of application, equipment, individual requirements and devices. The basic function of a laminar flow cabinet is pure product protection as well as personal protection through creating a clean, sterile environment at the workplace. The user reaches into the clean working area through a special opening in the laminar box and processes the products. The laminar flow box mainly consists of a frame, a work surface as well as extraction and filter systems. The primary functional principle of a laminar flow box / cabinet is to draw in the room air and pass it through a special filter system. The room air drawn in by a fan is freed of larger dust particles in a pre-filter and then passes through a suspended matter filter. Via the integrated outgoing air system the air is removed from the laminar flow box back into the atmosphere or is taken back to the filter via a separate channel, cleaned again and reintroduced into the working area. The germ and dust-free air emerging from the filter box in the form of a laminar flow fills the working space defined by the frame. In this way the penetration of dust particles and microorganisms into the operating area of the laminar flow box is prevented.
Laminar Flow Cabinet / Box - types
Laminar flow boxes come in a wide variety of designs, sizes, models and with many different options which allow optimum adaptation to the individual requirements of laboratories and industry. In addition to protecting the product from contamination, a laminar flow blow frequently also protects the user. Laminar flow boxes are classified according to clean room classes and into laminar flow boxes with a horizontal air flow and laminar flow boxes with a vertical air flow. In the case of laminar flow boxes with a horizontal air flow, the laminar flow occurs from the rear wall towards the operator, and in the case of a vertical air flow from the top to the bottom. For activities in which toxic gases, dusts or infectious aerosols are produced, only laminar flow boxes with a vertical air flow and special benches with perforated plates are permitted in order to extract the air from the working area.
