Stills - areas of application
Stills are important items of laboratory equipment for versatile use in laboratories, research and industry. Probably the best-known applications are the distillation of alcohol or the distilling of petroleum in refineries as well as the production of distilled water. The distillate from a water still is also used for cleaning and sterilisation processes, for buffer solutions as well as for microbiological and analytical applications.
Water Stills - function
In the laboratory water stills have many different functions and tasks. Depending on the area of application, laboratory equipment or usage volume, different apparatuses are employed. Stills produce extremely pure, low-gas, germ and pyrogen-free distillates with a very low conductance. The main function of a water still is to produce very pure water. In contrast to other separation methods distillation has the advantage that no auxiliary agents such as adsorbants or solvents are added. The distillation process in a water still involves the conversion of a liquid, such as water (spring water, mains water or pre-purified water) into a vapour and back into liquid form. In all cases of distillation the initial liquid is brought to the boil and the resulting vapour liquefied in a condenser through cooling - and the liquid condensate is collected. During the conversion from liquid to vapour form the water is extremely effectively separated from contaminants which have a higher boiling point. These remain in the evaporator as deposits. The water vapour, as well as a few substances which have a boiling point the same as or lower than water, is condensed which finally results in distilled water. This almost pure water produced by a water still is around 99.5% free of salts, organic substances, microorganisms, pyrogens as well bacteria. The pH value of the produced distillate becomes slightly if carbon dioxide from the ambient air dissolves in it. CO2 is absorbed until a dynamic balance between water and the air sets in. Pure water should therefore be used quickly and stored in an air-tight manner if possible.

Still types: Out water stills are classed as single water stills and water stills for double distillation. The conductance of the distillate essentially depends on the quality of the raw water and the design of the distillation apparatus. Through combination with a second distillation stage (double distillation) or through particular materials such as glass in the still, the purity of the distillate can increased further.
Storage tanks: The water stills come with a storage tank or without a storage tank.
