Retsch Emax high-performance ball mill
The revolution in fine grinding
With the Emax, RETSCH has developed a completely new ball mill for grinding with the highest energy input.
The unique combination of friction and impact allows the production of extremely fine particles in the shortest possible time.
- Faster and finer grinding than with any other ball mill
- Speeds up to 2,000 min-1 allow extremely fast pulverisation of the sample
- Innovative water cooling system allows long-term grinding without cooling phases
- Temperature monitoring with automatic switch-on and switch-off
- Innovative grinding bowl design enables narrow particle size distributions thanks to improved mixing of the sample

Innovative grinding bowl geometry
The high-performance ball mill combines high-frequency impact, intensive friction and controlled, circular grinding bowl movements to create a unique and highly effective comminution mechanism.
Highly efficient cooling system eliminates cooling phases
The greatest challenge in the development of a high-performance ball mill is temperature control, as the very high comminution energies lead to extreme heat generation in the grinding bowl.
RETSCH solved this problem with an innovative integrated water cooling system. Grinding pauses for cooling, which are necessary in conventional ball mills for longer grinding even at low speeds, can thus be avoided as far as possible in the Emax high-performance ball mill.
The grinding bowls in the Emax are cooled by an internal water cooling system via the bowl holder. Since water is better at dissipating heat than air, this cooling is very effective.
The user has access to 3 cooling modes: In addition to internal cooling, the Emax can also be connected to a recirculating cooler (chiller) or to the water pipe for further temperature reduction.
Functional principle: Unique comminution principle enables high final finenesses
The high-performance ball mill combines high-frequency impact, intensive friction and controlled, circular grinding bowl movements to form a unique and very effective comminution mechanism.
The grinding bowls have an oval shape and are each mounted on two discs that move the bowls along a circular path without changing their orientation.
The interaction of the bowl geometry and the motion sequence ensures strong friction between the balls, sample and bowl walls as well as high acceleration, which causes the balls to hit the sample at the bowl curves with a strong impact.
This results in significantly better mixing of the particles with higher final finenesses and narrower particle size distributions than previously possible in ball mills.
