Retsch Ultra Centrifugal Mill ZM 300

Rotor mills are used for the rapid fine comminution of soft to medium-hard as well as temperature-sensitive or fibrous materials.
The powerful ZM 300 ultra-centrifugal mill offers maximum size reduction performance and ease of operation.
The variable speed of 6,000-23,000 min-1 enables sample preparation in the shortest possible time that is gentle on the material and suitable for analysis.

Thanks to integrated temperature monitoring, reproducibility is guaranteed even when pulverising larger sample quantities.

The extensive accessories with various rotors, ring sieves and cassettes make the ZM 300 a true universal genius that can be adapted to many different comminution tasks.

The standard for food and animal feed

  • Gentle, very fast shredding thanks to two-stage pre- and fine shredding in one operation
  • Optimum control and reproducibility through monitoring of the cassette temperature
  • Patented cassette principle prevents sample loss and enables easy cleaning
  • Optional volume cassette for larger sample quantities up to 600 ml
  • Wide speed range 6,000-23,000 min-1
  • Defined final fineness through ring sieves with hole widths of 0.08-10 mm
  • Collecting vessels for sample volumes from 250 ml - 4.5 l
  • Automatic feeder and various cyclone versions available

Increased reproducibility through temperature monitoring
The speed range from 6000 to 23000 min-1 allows the grinding process to be optimally adapted to the requirements of the sample, as the grinding time can be kept as short as possible and the temperature increase as moderate as possible. Too much heat can have a negative effect on the grinding result if, for example, moisture or volatile components escape.

The ZM 300 has an integrated temperature sensor that measures the temperature of the cassette lid near the ring sieve. The measured temperature is permanently shown in the mill's display. This enables the user to optimise the grinding process and achieve better reproducibility.

High final finenesses and increased throughput through maximum speed
Classic centrifugal mills, such as the tried-and-tested ZM 200, usually have a maximum speed of 18,000 min-1 (rotor circumferential speed 98 m/s). The ZM 300 reaches a maximum speed of 23,000 min-1 (rotor circumferential speed of 118 m/s), producing particles that are 15-20% finer in comparison, depending on the sample material. The higher speed has a particularly positive effect on the final fineness of polymer samples that are cryogenically ground or fibrous samples such as hay. The throughput can be increased to 10-15% compared to the 18,000 min-1.

Application examples
Final finenesses of plastic materials (POM or PP) after grinding with different ring screens and speeds. The 23,000 min-1 result in a higher final fineness for all screens compared to grinding at 18000 min-1. For example, a 19% reduction in fineness can be achieved when POM is ground with a 0.12 mm spacer screen at 23000 min-1.

The maximum sample throughput, e.g. when grinding chicken feed with a 0.5 mm ring sieve, could be increased by 16% when grinding at maximum speed of 23,000 min-1 instead of 18,000 min-1.

Avoiding fines
By reducing the speed, the amount of fines in the ground sample can be controlled.
For example, if the grains of an animal feed sample are only to be coarsely ground to avoid dust formation, a reduction to 6,000-10,000 min-1 will produce the desired result.

Thanks to the variable speed, the ZM 300 can be flexibly adapted to all requirements in the food and feed industry, in the chemical industry and in agriculture.

Ideal for light and heat-sensitive samples
In combination with the cyclone suction unit, the ZM 300 ultra-centrifugal mill is also suitable for grinding light and heat-sensitive materials.

  • Effective cooling of sample and grinding tool
  • Improved sample discharge from the grinding chamber
  • Particularly suitable for large sample volumes
  • The cyclone can be equipped with sample vessels of 0.25 - 3 - and 5 litres
  • Ideal for cryogenic grinding
