Retsch Vibrating Mill MM 500 control Sets for temperature monitoring and control.
The MM 500 control is a vibrating mill for dry, wet and cryogenic grinding with a maximum frequency of 30 Hz.
It is the first vibrating mill on the market that allows the temperature to be monitored and regulated during the grinding process.
The achievable temperature range extends from -100 to 100 °C, with various options available for cooling and heating: The mill can be operated with various temperature control liquids, which allows the use of different temperature control units.
If liquid nitrogen is used for cooling, the vibrating mill can be easily expanded with the CryoPad.
The CryoPad functions like a docking station. It is positioned under the vibrating mill and connected.
The innovative CryoPad technology allows the selection and maintenance of a specific cooling temperature in the range of -100 to 0 °C during grinding.
Advantages of the sophisticated design
- Dry, wet and cryogenic grinding at up to 30 Hz for powerful comminution with high energy input
- fast and convenient sample preparation in two Screw-Lock grinding bowls up to 125 ml
- patented, hermetically sealed cooling pipe system for safe handling of tempering liquids
- wide range of accessories, such as venting lids and heavy metal-free grinding bowls (also suitable for low temperatures)
- Ergonomic clamping of the grinding bowls, low noise level, user-friendly setting of process parameters via touch display
Temperature monitoring and regulation
- Continuous temperature monitoring during sample preparation
- Cooling and heating in the range from - 100 to 100 °C
- Operation with liquid nitrogen or other temperature control fluids
- Great flexibility in the choice of temperature control unit (e.g. cryostat, chiller, LN2 tank ...)
- Cryogenic grinding also possible without LN2
CryoPad
- optional unit extension, necessary for operation with liquid nitrogen
- Regulation of the nitrogen flow through cooling plates
- When using liquid nitrogen, a specific cooling temperature in the range of -100 to 0 °C can be selected and maintained
Cooling plates for temperature control
Cooling or heating of the sample is realised by a patented indirect cooling concept. This circumvents the handling of open LN2 baths or dry ice.
To cool or heat the grinding bowls, they are placed on the cooling plates and fixed in place. Contact with the cold cooling plates results in heat being effectively dissipated from the grinding bowls.
The patented, hermetically sealed design of the internal cooling line system allows safe and flexible handling of tempering liquids and promises minimal effort for the user.
Depending on the operating setting, the temperature of the cooling plates can assume a value in the range of - 100 to 100 °C.
Application examples
The temperature control of the MM 500 control is specially designed for processing temperature-sensitive sample material. Cooling or heating can have different objectives.
Cooling the sample material, for example, results in
- the preservation of temperature-sensitive analytes (e.g. volatile substances or pharmaceutical or food ingredients)
- embrittlement
- wet grinding below room temperature
- the control of reactions in the context of mechanochemistry.
Some applications are also improved if the sample material is heated during the process.
Examples of this are:
- paste production (e.g. in the food industry)
- Initiation and intensification of mechanochemical reactions
The required temperatures and the recommended configuration of the vibrating mill depend on the specific application.
Typical sample materials
The MM 500 control offers a wide range of possible applications.
For example, it can be used for sample preparation of secondary fuels, soil, chemical products, medicines, ores, grain, tissue, glass, hair, ceramics, bones, plastics, minerals, oil seeds, plants, sewage sludge, tablets, textiles, wool, etc.
Functional principle
The grinding bowls of the vibrating mill MM 500 control perform circular arc-shaped vibrations in a horizontal position.
Due to the inertia of the balls, they strike the sample material located on the rounded end faces with high energy, causing it to be comminuted.
Due to the cup movement and the motion sequence of the grinding balls, intensive mixing takes place at the same time.
The degree of mixing can be increased by using several small grinding balls.
