Retsch Vibrating Mill MM 500 vario
Variability redefined. Preparation of 2 to 50 samples in one operation.
The new MM 500 vario Vibrating Mill is a versatile benchtop instrument that offers ultimate performance with maximum flexibility for your sample preparation process.
It is ideal for dry, wet and cryogenic grinding of small sample quantities with high throughput.
Screwable grinding bowls from 1.5 ml to 50 ml in hardened steel, stainless steel, tungsten carbide, agate, zirconium oxide and PTFE are available for the MM 500 vario.
For biological applications such as the homogenisation of plant materials, tissues or for breaking up cells, the MM 500 vario can be equipped with various adapters for disposable vessels from 0.2-5 ml.
Performance and design
- Final finenesses down to 5 μm possible
- Powerful comminution with up to 35 Hz
- Two times faster than grinders with only 30 Hz
- Ergonomic design with touch display
Flexibility
- Suitable for dry, wet or cryogenic grinding
- Equally suitable for short (<2 min) and long-term grinding (up to 99 hours)
- 12 SOPs and 4 programme cycles can be stored with up to 99 repetitions
- Grinding bowls in various sizes and materials; adapters for disposable vessels
Solutions for biological applications and cell disruption
Vibrating mills are often used for homogenisation of biological samples such as tissue, liver, muscle fibres, plants or sputum. Vibrating mills are also ideally suited for cell disruption by bead beating.
The MM 500 vario can be equipped with adapters for disposable tubes of different sizes: 0.2 ml/ 1.5 ml/ 2 ml/ 5 ml.
Depending on the model, 5-10 tubes can be used per adapter, whereby the following capacities can be achieved for one grinding process: 50x1.5 or 2 ml (or 60x0.2 ml), 20x5 ml
Grinding/homogenisation of biological samples usually takes less than 2 minutes. Cell disruption with good reproducibility and efficiency can be performed in 20 seconds to 5 minutes, depending on the cell type. For pulverisation of tough or heat-sensitive samples, cryogenic grinding in disposable vessels may be a suitable method.
Maximise your sample throughput
- Maximum frequency of 35 Hz reduces grinding time by 50% compared to vibrating mills with only 30 Hz
- Six grinding positions instead of only two, as with classic vibratory mills, ensure high sample throughput
- In combination, the throughput of the MM 500 vario is 6 times higher than that of a classic vibrating mill
Functional principle
The grinding bowls of the MM 500 vario vibrating mill perform arc-shaped vibrations in a horizontal position.
Due to the inertia of the balls, they strike the sample material located on the rounded end faces with high energy, causing it to be comminuted.
Due to the cup movement and the motion sequence of the grinding balls, intensive mixing takes place at the same time.
The degree of mixing can be further increased by using several small grinding balls.
Typical sample materials
RETSCH Vibrating Mills are true all-rounders. They homogenise e.g. waste, soils, chemicals, dragées, drugs, ores, cereal grains, fabrics, glass, hair, ceramics, bones, plastics, alloys, minerals, oil seeds, plant parts, slurries, tablets, textiles, wool and many more.
